White snus, when the term means nicotine pouches, contains no tobacco but does contain nicotine. White portion snus is different: it can be traditional tobacco snus in a light-coloured pouch. Neither the colour nor the word “white” is enough to identify the contents.

Tobacco free and nicotine free mean different things

Tobacco free describes the absence of tobacco. Nicotine free describes the absence of nicotine. A product can therefore contain nicotine without containing tobacco.

The Public Health Agency of Sweden defines tobacco free nicotine products as products without tobacco that contain nicotine for consumption. A pale pouch with tobacco inside is still a tobacco product.

Where does the nicotine come from?

Nicotine can be extracted from tobacco or produced synthetically. Its origin and the presence of tobacco in the finished product are separate questions.

“Tobacco free” does not establish that the nicotine is synthetic. Ask the manufacturer about a specific product and about any claim that the entire manufacturing process is independent of tobacco.

What replaces the tobacco?

A white pouch cut open, showing pale plant-fibre filling.
The filling in a nicotine pouch is usually plant fibre, not tobacco.

Nicotine pouches commonly contain a filling material such as plant fibres, together with nicotine and other ingredients. Water, flavourings, sweeteners and acidity regulators may also be present.

They are not simply finished tobacco snus with the tobacco washed away. Check the ingredient list for the exact product rather than relying on a description of a whole brand.

How to check the container

Three cans from above: ZYN Citrus, VELO Lime Flame and LOOP Creamy Cappuccino.
Product category and contents are stated on the can and in the product details.
  1. Identify the category: nicotine pouches or tobacco snus.
  2. Read the ingredients and any statement about tobacco.
  3. Read the nicotine figure with its unit. Mg/g and mg per pouch mean different things.
  4. Contact the manufacturer if the description and label conflict.

Does tobacco free mean risk free?

No. Nicotine is addictive. The absence of tobacco does not make a product harmless. The BfR risk assessment distinguishes known nicotine effects from gaps in evidence about long-term pouch use.

Common questions

Does white portion snus contain tobacco?

It can. In that context, “white portion” describes the pouch format.

Is all white snus nicotine free?

No. Nicotine pouches contain nicotine. Check for an explicit nicotine-free label if that is the property you are investigating.

Can colour identify the contents?

No. Read the category and ingredient list.
