Snus in hand luggage: what to check before flying

The answer depends on the journey, the product and the destination. Passing airport security does not automatically mean a product may be brought into another country. Check both baggage rules and entry rules before packing snus or nicotine pouches.

The Swedish Transport Agency notes that airlines and other countries may apply additional restrictions. General baggage information cannot replace checking the whole route.

Identify the product accurately

Tobacco snus contains tobacco. Nicotine pouches contain nicotine without tobacco leaves. They are separate categories even though both may informally be called snus.

When contacting an authority, give the tobacco content, nicotine content, number of containers and total net weight. Rules for cigarettes, tobacco snus or e-liquid do not automatically apply to nicotine pouches.

Check the whole journey

List departure, transit and destination countries.
Check personal import and possession rules.
Check quantity limits, age requirements, taxes and declarations.
Check airline baggage rules separately.
Ask the relevant authority for a written answer if unclear.

Personal use is not a general exemption from a ban. A shop offering delivery to a country is not evidence of what travellers may bring in.

Travelling to Sweden

Swedish Customs sets separate conditions for tobacco and other nicotine products. Travellers must be at least 18 and must have bought and be transporting the goods themselves. Allowances depend on the product and whether the journey is from inside or outside the EU.

These rules concern entry into Sweden. They do not establish what may be taken from Sweden into another country. Check special customs and fiscal territories separately.
