White snus is an informal name often used for nicotine pouches without tobacco. These contain nicotine in a filling without tobacco leaves. They are placed under the lip, where nicotine can be absorbed through the lining of the mouth.
The term can be confused with white portion snus, which can contain tobacco. This article uses white snus to mean nicotine pouches.
What does white snus contain?

Ingredients vary, but common components include:
- Filling material: cellulose or other plant fibres.
- Nicotine: the addictive substance.
- Water and moisture-retaining ingredients: these affect moisture in the mixture.
- Flavourings and sweeteners: components of the flavour formulation.
- Acidity regulators: these affect pH.
This is an overview, not the ingredient list for a particular container. Read the actual label, especially when checking an allergy or sensitivity. A flavour name does not identify every ingredient.
Reading the nicotine figure
Mg per pouch describes the amount in one pouch. Mg/g describes the concentration per gram and must be combined with the filling weight.
For example, 10 mg/g in 0.6 g of filling corresponds to 6 mg per pouch. This is arithmetic, not a recommended strength.
Dots, numbers without units and words such as “strong” are not a shared measurement system across brands. Nicotine in the pouch is also different from nicotine absorbed by the body.
Mini, slim and other formats

Format describes physical size and shape. Mini is generally smaller; slim is generally narrow and elongated. Exact dimensions and weights differ between manufacturers.
A smaller pouch does not necessarily contain less nicotine. Keep format, weight and nicotine content separate.
Five pieces of information to find
- Product category and full name.
- Nicotine content with a clear unit.
- Pouch count and net weight.
- Ingredients and warnings.
- Manufacturer or importer, batch code and date marking.
If the online description differs from the container, keep both records and contact the seller or manufacturer. Do not guess the intended variant or unit.
What is known about health risks?
Nicotine is addictive and can affect the cardiovascular system. The BfR assessment identifies limited evidence about long-term pouch use. These consumer products should not be presented as approved smoking cessation medicines.
In Sweden, sales are restricted to people aged 18 or over. The Public Health Agency of Sweden explains the product category and its regulation.
